The methodology
nobody else has.

76 citations. Zero competitors. Perception-First Design™ workshops, audits, and keynotes.

The Methodology

Perception-First Design is a 5-layer cognitive psychology framework for designing how people actually perceive, decide, and act. Not opinions. Not best practices. 76 citations from two non-overlapping literatures: perception science and ADHD neuroscience.

The only methodology that connects psychology to design to implementation to measurement.

Layer What it governs
Layer 0: Cognitive Load Cognitive Load. How much mental effort the interface demands before anything else happens.
L1 First Impression. The 50ms judgment. Pre-conscious trust or rejection.
L2 Processing Fluency. How easy it feels to understand. Fluent = trustworthy.
L3 Perception Bias. The heuristics visitors use to evaluate quality, price, and fit.
L4 Decision Architecture. How choices are structured to guide behavior without coercion.

Simply Smart Home

Revenue tripled. Repositioned digital photo frames as smart home décor. Same hardware, different perception. Disney licensed the brand. Partnership lasted four years.

iO Theater

Online ticket sales share for a 40-year Chicago improv institution. New booking experience. Built in half the time the previous agency quoted.

Vacuum Sealers Unlimited

Homepage load time, down from 3–4 seconds. Ten years, same client. Incremental optimization. The owner put three kids through college on that site’s revenue.

The Position

I went looking for other designers working at this intersection. What I found were developers, researchers, founders, tool makers. The design voice is barely in the room. Nobody is grounding design decisions in cognitive psychology. That is the gap. Perception-First Design fills it.

Designed from the cognitive edge case. Works better for everyone.

FAQ

Common questions.

What’s the difference between the half-day and full-day?

Half-day is a workshop. Your team learns the five layers, applies them to your product live, walks away with a ranked fix list.

Full-day is the workshop plus a written report you can hand to stakeholders. Numbers, fix specs, projections. The half-day is action. The full-day is action plus the document your team uses for the next six months.

What do I walk away with from a Neuroinclusive Audit?

A scored evaluation of your product against all five PFD layers. Specific fixes mapped to each issue, ranked by impact. A roadmap with implementation specs.

An executive summary for stakeholders who need the short version. The full document runs 30 to 60 pages depending on the surface area.

How is a PFD audit different from a UX audit?

A UX audit tells you what users said and what users did. A PFD audit tells you what their unconscious processed before they knew what they felt.

UX is interview plus usability test. PFD is cognitive psychology applied to your product. I work with what the visitor’s brain decides before logic kicks in.

Do you do ongoing retainers after the audit?

Yes. Most clients who do an audit want help executing. The audit becomes the roadmap. The retainer is the team that ships against it. Audits without execution are paper.

What’s the keynote for, specifically?

Conferences, offsites, leadership teams. The talk is “Designing from the Edge.” It’s how cognitive constraints became design material for me. ASD and severe ADHD. The accommodations I built for myself turned into a methodology that works for everyone.

Not an inspirational talk. A working presentation about why mainstream design treats edge cases as edge cases when they should be the center.

How do I prepare for the workshop?

Send me your live site URL and one or two pages you want analyzed in depth. That’s it. I do the prep.

Your team shows up ready to learn the framework and apply it to what you already shipped. No homework. No pre-reads.
